CASHEW NUTS from VIETNAM

The cashew plant originates from the Amazonian alluvial regions and has been cultivated for centuries in all tropical regions such as Vietnam and throughout the Indochinese Peninsula.

THE PRODUCER

The local company TARGET AGRICULTURE Biological - Fairtrade has developed this important supply chain together with the Xuan Tho cooperative, located in the municipality of Dong Nai, in the province of Binh Phuoc, in Vietnam, in the floodplain of the Saigon River.

In 28 years of history, the cooperative has focused on sustainability by developing innovative, organic and accessible agro-ecological methods, which they have successfully experimented and presented to rural farmers from all over Asia.

They are imported by Rewild, a young and dynamic Treviso company formed over years of international cooperation and support with rural populations in South America, and today an importer of organic and fair-trade products from many tropical countries, including Vietnam.

The quality:

our cashew nuts are medium-large sized peeled seeds, called W320: or 300 — 320 kernels/pound.

Color: White, light ivory or light yellow.

THE COLLECTION

The cashew nut harvest season in Binh Phuoc province, Vietnam, begins between the end of January and May.

The seed is removed from the fruit and processed at high temperatures to be peeled and lose its slight toxicity. For human consumption, the external seed is used and only a small amount is compatible, while a large part of the seeds and the cashew fruit, called 'apple', are usually

thrown away.

Sustainability and community support

TARGET AGRICULTURE's vision of sustainability consists of producing sustainable food for end consumers and local communities, while benefiting farmers, their communities and the environment, through fair trade projects and sustainable innovation. The methods of organic agriculture and applied agroecology are transmitted through educational programs with the direct involvement of technical personnel in monitoring and

assisting farmers.

These initiatives are recognized by organic and ethical certification bodies globally and across Asia.

BY-PRODUCTS FOR THE BENEFIT OF FARMERS

Through various internal research and development projects, TARGET AGRICULTURE has come to define a process for using “black soldier fly” larvae to decompose discarded cashew nuts and fruits. Black soldier flies (calcium worms) are very voracious and can decompose almost any protein-containing food.
The process of decomposing cashew waste lasts 12-15 days, during which time the larvae of the black soldier fly grow to a significant size. Then they are separated from the biomass
to be used for different purposes: a) The larvae become feed for livestock, in particular, worms are an extremely nutritious food with a high protein content for direct consumption by livestock, poultry and fish. In addition, it can be pre-processed as a puree to be cooked with bran for cattle and poultry.

b) Biomass becomes fertilizer: cashew nuts, after being decomposed by calcium worms, create a mixture of biomass that is a nutrient used as fertilizer for plants, in particular for the cashew nut crops themselves.

AGROFORESTRY

An important intervention to support biodiversity and soil conservation is agroforestry with the Aquilaria species: a medicinal arboreal plant that grows well in climatic conditions with medium-high temperatures, high rainfall and humidity, and therefore in fertile, moist and drained soils. The plants were built in the 2023 rainy season (May/June).

Project location: Dong Nai province and Binh Phuoc province.

Number of farming families that will participate in the project: 34-50 farming families.

BIOGAS

During the period of December 2022 and January 2023, representatives of the cooperatives mobilized pig farmers to participate in the construction of a biogas system.

At the beginning of February 2023, 10 farming families agreed to participate in the project.
