Great satisfaction with the study trip — social trip to Calabria last month. We went in about 40 to discover a fascinating and contradictory Calabria. Contradictory for the beauty and the extraordinary nature of the territory combined with the tragic presence of the 'Ndrangheta.
We disembarked on Thursday, April 30 and headed to the Pirapora farmhouse, where we met the managers (former “globetrotting” photographers who wrote very important photographic services) of the farm. Moved to Milan as a young man, where he met his wife, after several years of traveling around the world to photograph landscapes and nature, the nostalgia for Calabria led them to set up a closed cycle farm, full of tourists from May to October, with cuisine based exclusively on company products and neighboring companies, all organic.
Friday, May 1 in Gioiosa Jonica in the morning, we were in the Liberation Community, where we met the President who presented the Goel Cooperative Group. This meeting, particularly significant for the topics covered, made us understand the Calabrian reality and the ways in which the 'Ndrangheta perversely infiltrates the network of relationships between people, organizations and companies. This method, we discovered only recently, has also been implemented in the north, for many years, without many of us realizing it due to the creeping and not very “noisy” methods, based on the principle that the absence of public services (deprivation decided and desired by the 'Ndrangheta) leads many individuals and companies to choose to bow in favor of 'Ndrangheta rather than fight against this mechanism. This is not what the Goel boys did not do, who over time, with difficulty but successfully, are recovering people and companies to legality. Sometimes, however, there are unwelcome surprises with attacks directed at people (family) or things (premises or vehicles). In the early afternoon, walk along the Roccella Jonica waterfront and then we continued to Monasterace Marina, at the Farmhouse A Lanterna (a member of Goel Bio and victim of various mafia intimidations). The farm is located in the park of Ancient Kaulon. Nice social dinner with entertainment from storytellers. Saturday, May 2, we went to the Grecanica area, to the town of Bova (RC) where we visited the ancient village and met some associations such as Borghi Solidali, Cooperativa San Leo (hiking and hospitality), Coop. Naturaliter (hikers). Simple but tasty lunch at the Coop Restaurant. San Leo and excursion to the Amendolea Valley. Dinner in the village there is a group of Greek music, they are shepherds who love ancient music, who made us dance the pizzica.
Sunday, May 3, after visiting a bergamot farm, we returned to the airport and our homes. Thanks again to Maurizio Agostino who acted as a precious guide on our journey.
