Let's celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Cooperative: first appointment on April 13th!

22.03.24

According to data from UnionCamere, the average lifespan of Italian companies is 12 years, with a longer lifespan in the North East (13.3 years) and for those in the agricultural sector (16 years).
Celebrating the goal of forty years for an economic activity is therefore not so obvious, and it is even less so for those that, like the El Tamiso Agricultural Cooperative, are accompanied by other apparently less profitable aspects that are purely

economic.

Founded in May 1984 by a dozen (then) young organic farmers, convinced of the need to abandon synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides, to return to basing soil fertility on organic matter, to abandon monocultures and to push for agrarian rotations, on biodiversity, on the recovery of ancient varieties, on animal welfare (and here it must be considered that the first European legislation to regulate organic agriculture dates back to 1991 and was applied in Italy only in 1993) The El Tamiso Cooperative is still here after forty years.
And with healthy budgets (above 10 million in recent years), a social base increased to 53 farmers, a counter in Piazzadelle Erbe (since 1985) and a store under the Salone (since 2017) in Padua, a counter in Venice in Rio Terà dei Pensieri and one in Mestre within the Fair Trade Bio Market, regular deliveries to consumer buying groups in Padua, the Brenta Riviera and Cadore, a stand (since 1996) at the Padua Agro Food Market from where fruit and vegetables and their processed products, all certified by control bodies independent, they reach dozens of stores, canteens, restaurants, stores of other farms, processing and distribution companies throughout Veneto, in Italy

and abroad

One of the strengths of the Cooperative has always been the particular relationship with citizens, considered more as partners in a project for the conversion of the economy and production, in the key of environmental and social sustainability, than trivial customers: with broccoli, tomatoes and apples, El Tamiso has always accompanied initiatives for listening, dissemination and discussion.

To celebrate the first forty years worthily, organize a first event for next Saturday, April 13 in Caltana di Santa Maria di Sala, starting at 10.00 am appointment at the Organic Farmhouse “Papaveri e Ducks”, in Via Caltana 1.

An event with a bang, a day of agroecology to which consumers, farmers and operators of the agro-food supply chains, technicians, public administrators, environmental organizations, information operators are invited...

In the morning, the program includes a guided tour of Andrea Giubilato's farm, a short distance away in the heart of the ancient Roman Centuriation, to immerse yourself in the practical application of agroecological principles, in case of unstable weather it is advisable to have suitable footwear.

This is followed by an organic buffet offered by the Cooperative at “Poppies and Ducks”.

Around 2 p.m., there will be a very spectacular show of cutting a shape of Parmigiano Reggiano weighing about 40 kg with the traditional method by hand. The dagger and the appropriate almond knife will be handled by the experts of the Santa Rita social cheese factory, which for over 30 years has been handcrafted organic mountain Parmigiano Reggiano in the Modena Apennines, a Slow Food garrison and a collector of awards in international competitions.

In the afternoon, the highlight, with the lectio magistralis “Agroecology to save the planet: regenerating the Earth and landscapes in crisis” by Miguel Altieri and Clara Nicholls.

This is an event of absolute importance: the two speakers are among the world's leading experts in the application of ecological principles to agricultural production and the management of agrosystems.

Miguel Altieri, agronomist and entomologist, is professor of Agroecology in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management of the University of Berkeley, California, and for four years he was the general coordinator of the sustainable agriculture network and extension program of the United Nations Development Program.

Clara Nicholls, a researcher, teaches sustainable rural development at the US universities of Berkeley, Stanford and Santa Clara.
The Italian translation is guaranteed.

Next, a round table, moderated by Roberto Pinton, with the participation of Maurizio Agostino (agronomist, president of Rete Humus - social network for Italian bio-agriculture), Stefano Bianchi (“consumer”, president of the Italian Association for Organic Agriculture of Veneto) and Enrico Maria Casarotti (winemaker of the family organic farm and president of A.Ve.Pro.Bi, Venetian association of organic and

biodynamic producers).

“Agriculture is not only the great victim of climate change, but it is also one of its main drivers, continuing to deny it will not improve the situation. The environmental impact of the agri-food system, like it or not, causes 37% of total greenhouse gas emissions,” comments Franco Zecchinato, president of

the El Tamiso cooperative.

“The conventional agricultural sector persists in not admitting that land cultivated with intensive agriculture is now exhausted, with no more organic matter and on the road to sterility, it requires increasingly massive doses of chemical fertilizers that worsen its already terrible state. On Italian fields, more than 120 thousand tons of pesticides are used per year, which are now also found in uncultivated habitats around mountain ranges, in natural parks and protected areas, in 67% of surface water and in 34% of groundwater in the Po Valley, in 70% of fruit and in 31% of vegetables sampled on the market by official analyses.

Agriculture can no longer postpone a new approach to the environment, to production methods and to the relationship with consumer citizens, before it is too late. Our first forty years show that the alternative is possible.”

The cooperative's birthday is an excellent opportunity to learn more.
