Colretti on the growth of Italian organic products, our reply

05.01.24

The article that appeared on QDPNews.it (read here) in which the president of Colretti Carlo Salvan rattles off the numbers of the growth of the organic sector in Italy, elicited an immediate reply from Roberto Pinton, secretary of Assobio and one of the founders of El Tamiso, who we make our own:

Let's record yet another mystification on the part of Colretti.
On the one hand, it boasts, as if it were its own merit, the development of organic agriculture, and on the other hand, through the agricultural consortia that are part of its system, it is the largest Italian retailer of pesticides that contaminate national soils and groundwater, kill bees and other pronubous insects and reduce biodiversity.
It is also the largest Italian retailer of GMO feed and stands out for its direct lobbying activity in Italy and, through its European federation, in Brussels, for the authorization of what it calls Tea (Assisted Evolution Technologies), but they remain GMOs.
It is among the organizations that put their sticks in the wheels of European Union proposals for a less unsustainable use of pesticides, for a reduction of antibiotics in farms, for the increase of animal welfare and for the protection of biodiversity.
In essence, it does not share a single position of organic farmers, but it manages to take pride in their growth, with an amazing three-card game.
The coldirecttian statement that “Italy can count on the greenest agriculture in Europe” is refuted precisely by the results of the report “Stop pesticides on the plate 2023” that Legambiente publishes every year based on official data (Arpa, ASL and IZS): just over 70% of the samples of fruit marketed in Italy have residues of one or more pesticides (it is better for vegetables: it is “only” a little more than 34% to be contaminated by pesticides).
Which means that, based on European and national legislation, 70% of fruit and 34% of vegetables cannot be considered suitable for weaning children, because they do not protect their health.
Put as it should be said, current agriculture (which according to Colretti is' green 'than' greener 'can't be more' green ') gives products that the baby food industry is required to reject because they are not safe for children's health. And be careful not to inform willing parents who, instead of buying baby food, grate apples for their children that 7 out of 10 apples contain residues of insecticides and pesticides banned in their diet.
As long as the numbers are these, there is little to brag about the “green” content of agri-food production.
And if you go to read the “National Report on Pesticides in Water” that the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research publishes every year, you discover that the 122 thousand tons (or 122 million kg) of pesticides used every year in Italy lead to the contamination of surface water and deep groundwater, with a continuous deterioration in the last decade: official investigations have detected pesticide residues in 55.1% of surface water monitoring points and 23.3% of deep water, but these are the national averages: in northern Italy, contamination concerns 67% of surface water and 34% of groundwater.
30.5% of surface water and 5.4% of deep water exceeds the limits established by European legislation, with glyphosate as the substance that most frequently exceeds the thresholds (but in a sample, residues of 32 substances were found, without the safety of such cocktails ever being investigated).
In Veneto (where farmers who use the herbicide glyphosate, the most responsible for water non-compliance, even receive income support awards), 9,516,469 kg of pesticides, 2,998,608 kg of insecticides, 2,976,810 kg of herbicides and 1,475,711 kg of other pesticides have been purchased: it makes a total of 16,967,598 kg of synthetic chemicals, for the beauty of 3 and a half kilos for each of the 4,849,553

residents in the region.

What is' green 'in all this is a mystery.
The only way out of this toxic spiral is really the constant growth of organic agriculture, which does not use even a gram of synthetic chemicals in its fields, under the control of independent bodies authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and supervised by the Regions, do not continue to rinse your mouth with “green” mouthwash, what Colretti does is only “greenwashing” to confuse consumers, hoping that they will continue to buy (and pay for) contaminated products.
