The Siberian temperatures that accompany us during this period are accompanied by the continuing dry climate that becomes evident only when you notice the tractors plowing the land and a typical dust rises more in April-May than in February.
The cold has arrived. And also a lot. Many trees had already presented their new shoot, and this will be lost due to these frosts.
Many plants will be 'scalded, boiled' by the cold. Boiled because of the appearance they will have after these frosts: the plant cells, rich in water, split due to the increase in volume of the internal liquids that freeze and, once thawed, will make stems and leaves limp.
Only a few local late vegetable varieties have endured. And this is thanks to the adaptation process they have had over many years. This is the advantage of old varieties: they withstand extreme conditions, thanks to the normal availability of genetic material capable of developing components suitable for the most varied conditions.
The ability of a plant to adapt to an environment that is abnormal for it (simply because it is transferred or because in exceptional cases there are extreme weather phenomena), is great in old varieties, while it is very limited in new varieties, selected with the sole purpose of producing a lot and lasting a long time on supermarket shelves.
