No O.G.M. in the fields of Vivaro (Pordenone), No O.G.M. in Italy.

On September 1, 2013 in Vivaro (PN), environmental associations organized a demonstration against the introduction and cultivation of MAIZE GMO 810 Monsanto. The event, which was intended to inform about the impact that GMOs have on the environment and on human health, took place in front of a field sown with GMO corn, owned by Giorgio Fidenato, a farmer known for years for his repeated attempts to produce MAIZE whose cultivation, at the time (2010) and still today, is illegal at least in Italy.

In essence, the event was intended to make public the role of a series of farmers grouped around the initials “Futuragra Libertarian Movement and Federated Farmers” who play a provocative and Trojan horse function in Italy on behalf of the multinational Monsanto producer and holder of the patent on hybrid corn Mon 810.

This is the second time that this character tries to force current regulations, introducing GMO seeds into Friuli, which for the enormous quantities declared are obviously given away by Monsanto, creating a state of fact that in Italy you can attack the health of the environment and ours by playing on the lack of clarity and legislative gaps in Italian laws on the subject.

There were more than 200 participants in the Vivaro event, many invaded the field, but eradicated only a few corn plants to create space to bury some clods brought from their land to signify the supremacy of the biodiversity of our lands over biotechnology applied to corn; AltraAgriculture North East brought and planted a small oak tree (see photo).

The various interventions that took place during the morning explained how the Friuli Region is abandoning its initial choice not to allow genetically modified (GMO) crops on its territory. In June, Regional Law no. 5 of 14/4/2011 was amended, prohibiting the planting of GMO species, inserting the COEXISTENCE CLAUSE BETWEEN GMOs AND TRADITIONAL CROPS, although it is well known that this is not possible and that it only serves to allow crops that, at a minimum, should be subject to the PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE, given all the studies and research that demonstrate how the modified DNA inserted in these seeds spreads to other species, in animals and also in humans.

On August 10, an 18-month D.L. was approved (!!!) in which the presence of GMO crops is prohibited throughout the Italian territory, but the Friuli Region does not send the Forest Guard or the other forces responsible for reclaiming the GMO land (eradicate the plants) of which it is aware, but only seizes them. It is as if when faced with a fire, the fire brigade fenced off the ground that is burning and did not start to extinguish it.

In addition, it has been reiterated that none of what the multinational corporations that own GMO seeds say about increased productivity, about the lower consumption of herbicides is true. The only result is that the farmer is absorbed into the monopolizing chain of multinational corporations and loses his autonomy and the possibility of maintaining and increasing the diversity of species.

Multinationals such as Monsanto, Syngenta and a few others would become owners of food and our existence, while Italian agriculture needs organic farming, diversifying the production of the species, thus safeguarding the environment and our health and tending to build its own food sovereignty.

The fight against GMOs and for sustainable agriculture must continue by clearly addressing, at this precise moment, the remediation of land by eradicating corn plants in their entirety and sending them for disposal.

In addition, we think it is necessary to use the few months (18) granted by the decree law of 10 August 2013 to reconstruct a network of subjects and sensitivities that, starting from their own detail, make themselves available on this issue, realizing that climate and those mass mobilizations that allow us to prevent in real time and not on a woolen thread like in this year!! the occurrence of other illegal and socially unacceptable sowings and crops.

Only 18 months of moratorium, therefore, to defeat those who think they are passing GMOs through the hypocrisy and ambiguities of the coexistence clause. (see upcoming deadlines in other articles).
