Let's say no to GMOs! Sign the petition

11.03.13

Last September, a ruling by the European Court and a very strong pressure from multinational seed companies on community bodies, effectively gave a “green light” to the cultivation of some varieties of Genetically Modified Organisms even in those countries where they were banned. Almost all European countries have adopted the 'safeguard clause' that blocks this' liberalization 'at the national level and have in fact banned all GMO cultivation. Unfortunately, in Italy all this has not been done (despite the fact that all the regions have asked for the blocking of GMOs), but, what is very serious, this issue is not being talked about at all. WE CANNOT REMAIN IDLE IN THE FACE OF THIS DANGER.. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ACT!!! We strongly demand that Italy also block GMO crops.

A petition has already been signed by hundreds of citizens. We invite everyone to sign, to have signed and disseminated the petition that asks for the immediate adoption of the safeguard clause, the ban on GMOs. But why do we say NO to GMOs?

First of all, because GMO crops CONTAMINATE and therefore cause the LOSS of cultivated BIODIVERSITY (in this case of the typical varieties of corn.. sponcio, marano, fiorentin, fifty, pearl white..). Furthermore, GMO seeds DO NOT allow the REPRODUCTION of SEMEN (also because they are subject to a patent). All forms of peasant autonomy are lost and a sort of dependence (slavery) is created on the multinational producer (in this case Monsanto). Furthermore, there is NO SAFETY with respect to RISKS to the health of human beings and animals, to the (permanent) CONTAMINATION of the soil and the environment. And NO certainty of resistance to drought and adverse weather conditions.

We also register a strong OPPOSITION to the cultivation of GMOs by all regions, especially for economic reasons (primarily for a loss of image)... and finally... let's stop evoking 'hunger in the world', FAO data are clear: “food is produced for more than 8 billion people while there are 6 billion of us” so it is not a problem of production but of distribution.

We who believe and work for agriculture, a rurality based on the typical characteristics of our territory, on healthy, organic and sustainable cultivation techniques, are sure that the future, especially of our Earth, is “green” and certainly not contaminated by GMO seeds.

We therefore ask trade associations and environmental associations, local authorities, the Belluno Dolomites Park, our political representatives and all those who care about their Earth for a position, a declaration, a mobilization, an informative action on the GMO issue... We invite everyone to mobilize to tear through this deafening silence that surrounds the issue, aware that the vast majority of citizens and farmers are against GMOs and that there are enormous interests so that this territory is not known and contaminated as well. “we went from the death camps to the extermination of the camps” (A. Zanzotto)

Appeal signed by: House of Common Goods, Water and Common Good Committee, Skasera, Cultivate Sharing Group, Organic Dolomites Association, Gas Pipeline, Arianova Association, WWF, WOOF-Italia, La Cagnatela, AIAB, Radio Gamma 5-.
