El Tamiso is a cooperative of farmers, who practice exclusively organic farming since the early eighties. Our main activity is to sell the products of our associates and to assist them on technical and commercial issues.
As an association we promote organic agriculture and its principles, for we believe its environmental sustainability. An other key principle of our work is that the production and the subsequent selling has to be on local basis: products have to travel as less as possible! This, again, is a sustainable environmental policy as much as it is important for maintaining local culture and social bonds. In that perspective, we work intensively with G.A.S. (Ethical purchasing groups), who have been always very careful about quality, seasonality and origin of products.
What is organic farming
Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and control pests on a farm. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, and genetically modified organisms.[source: Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission]
The name and the brand
El tamiso in venetian dialect means sieve. A tool that metaphorically says much about the philosophy of our cooperative whose goal is to sift through ideas in order to find the good ones to build on.
After more thatn 25 years of activity we are still passionate about offering selected food.
The agriculture cooperative El Tasmiso was founded in Padova in May 10th 1984, by some farmers and agriculture experts along with a group of enthusiastic people, who strongly believed in organic agriculture and natural feeding.
From the beginning street markets selling was adopted as the best way to channel ideas and products. Consumers were already sensitive about issues such as “clean food”; furthermore in 1986 the terrible accident that took place in Chernobyl, where a Nuclear Station was heavily damaged and the soil and its products were called “contaminated” in many countries in Europe, included Italy, raised even more awareness and interest in that.
In those years El Tamiso, already strongly connected to the Italian Organic Movement ( AIAB), was expanding its relationship with many organic regional producers and activated a large commercial distribution on national scale in the specialized market.
In 1999 El Tamiso moved its headquarter at the main city market (MAAP, which is one of the most important and dynamic in Italy). El Tamiso was and still is the only organic-food seller in the market.
